Re Sound
Those of you that follow this on Facebook may have noticed my status update yesterday about life coming tumbling down around me. I’ll admit, some shit went down and I came out the sore looser in the circumstance, that’s really all I need to say on the matter. My good mate Zac seems, often, to know how to say what I need to hear in these moments and this time around was true of that...

Pomo What?
Lucy’s article on what ever it is actually on has some interesting points none the less. I’ve done cultural studies subjects in undergrad and great slabs of discussion were had in classes about post modernism and I still don’t quite get what Lucy is on about.
He begins however by suggesting that the role of a journalist is not dissimilar to that of a photographer. He is perhaps...
The Minister, the money and Ms Liu
I find Baker and McKenzie’s article difficult to read. The piece reads as a list of the facts that they have found on this issue, there is no personality in the article. Perhaps I’m wrong about that perhaps there is personality in the piece (that of Ms Liu and I clash with her.
The question comes up in my mind, how does one tackle a big and difficult issue that may have legal concerns...
Serving in Florida - journo in the first person.
Ehrenreich’s article is another great example of the first person style of journalism. I argued here that I believed that the questioning nature of this style of writing put it into a framework that defined it as journalism, The same principals are evident here but at an even stronger level.
In this article the author raises awareness of and in an indirect nature questions the value of...
Death by Buffet
I personally really enjoy this personal style of writing. I especially enjoy it from someone who is obviously trying to get themselves established in an industry that I myself hope at some time to be in. More generally though I like the ‘real’ nature of this type of writing, the fact that it’s not framed in expert language or written in a way that says ‘I’m just...
Uni
just decided to read over course guides again for the first time since I started
things to do…
1. Work out getting credit for at least 1 subject next semester otherwise I can’t graduate
2. Write up all the blog entries I have to hand in next week - might be handy to work out what the ANZAC day and easter holiday readings were?
3. Work out what the ‘writing exercises’...

Journo in context - press conference trial...
here is the beginning of my attempt at the news article from the press conference in our last class. The article is not long enough and does not have the necessary quotes included.
Police pulled a young Frankston couple from the burning wreckage of their car in the early hours of Monday morning.
The Red Nissan Pulsar hit an embankment and burst into flames after a rock was thrown through the...

Journo in context - lead writing exercise
GM Food is largely unavoidable in Australia, due to lax food labelling laws, according to Choice Magazine.
Cereals, breads, cakes, biscuits, sauces and cooking oils are among an almost endless list of food products that may contain GM Canola Oil according to Choice senior campaigner Clare Hughes.
Journo in context, story ideas
so for this subject I have to write a 400 word news story, using 2 interviews as research. My ideas were, firstly; a young man in the U.K has recently been fined for in appropriate behaviour on his ex partners Fscebook page.
Another idea was to look at the issue of air travel, can we environmentally afford to keep flying?
Journo in context 2
this week we look at investigative journalism. Paige Williams in her article looks at the issue of poverty in Atlanta. Nick McKenzie on the other hand paints a picture of a classic scenario of the rich fighting to get richer.
So, how were these articles developed and where did the information come from. Personally I have the sense that there is not a great deal to be learned from the McKenzie...
More great advise from Ira Glass
I’ve mentioned in the past how much Ira Glass and his program This American Life inspires me. Tonight I noticed on their website that they have a whole lot of advise about how to get started in making great radio.
You can find the links to their sources here. One of the great things in the list is this site Transom where the public have the opportunity to look at, develop, ask for...

Back to School
So, some of you may be aware that I’ve returned to uni this year. I’m doing post grad in Media and Communications at Swinburne. Part of a few of my subjects I think will be regular blog posts, don’t be surprised then if you see a lot more posts reflecting on journalistic texts among other things.
The blog posts will largely be for a subject called Journalism in context ....

My next project
Over the next few days before I head back to Melbourne I want to put together a radio piece. The concept is this, I want to find a family of summer holiday tourists here in Tathra that have been coming here for years, maybe even generations.
Lets open this can of worms, ask the question, how does it feel to be ‘a local’ in a town where you aren’t actually a local? You know the...
Discovering more amazing radio
I’m constantly on the look out for different kinds of radio, things that interest, engage and inspire me as a radio producer. In my last post I pointed you in the direction of ‘This American Life’. After downloading the podcast of that program for the past 3 weeks I am completely hooked on it. If you are interested in having a listen then it is even easier at the moment as Radio...

What makes 'good' radio good?
As someone who has worked in community radio for 10 years I’ve always had this idea that radio is about getting a message out or raising awareness of an issue. The other kind of radio I know of course is late night talk back or straight up music radio. Everyone has their favorite style or what ever, hell some people can’t stand radio at all.
I’ve discovered something new with...
Tony Abott!!!
The liberal party has just appointed Tony Abott as it’s new leader. At the rally I was at on the weekend I heard a state member of the greens jokingly suggest that at the next election we might see a race between the greens and labor rather than the two party race we currently have. Suddenly it doesn’t seem so far fetched as the Liberals implode further and further in on themsleves...
Love is Love
Yesterday around Australia thousands of people took to the streets to show their support for Gay and Lesbian people having the right to marry.
In Melbourne it was an amazing scene as a huge crowd formed on the lawn outside the state library. A few of my beliefs about the Gay and Lesbian scene were proven… firstly that there is no ‘type’ of Gay or Lesbian person, it takes all...
